I used to really enjoy watching Lou Dobbs on Moneyline on CNN. Now that he is more focused on news and politics, I am not impressed.
Several paragraphs into his
weekly opinion piece regarding the massacre at Virginia Tech, he starts spouting statistics about deaths on college campuses and how "We must reject death and violence as a rite of passage on college campuses."
Say What?
First of all if you look at the statistics for deaths on college campuses I am fairly certain you will find that they are generally lower than the comparable statistics for the general population. While I (as a graduate of Virginia Tech) am deeply saddened by the tragic events there, this event should not be cause to focus on why these types of events happen in schools, but rather, why they happen anywhere. Think of the bombing at the Olympics in Atlanta, the DC Snipers, and the Unabomber, just to name a few.
Second, I think you would be hard pressed to find anyone who did not reject "death and violence as a right of passage" even before this incident. His statement is just a waste of pixels.
